Game 1: Rangers Outslug Red Sox

Texas Rangers 9, Boston Red Sox 2

May 16, 2024, Fenway Park

The Texas Rangers kicked off the series with a commanding 9-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The Rangers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Richie Ashburn singled to start the game, followed by a single from Stan Musial. Mel Ott and Jack Tobin added RBI singles, putting the Rangers up 2-0.

Boston's Bert Blyleven struggled on the mound, giving up six earned runs over six innings, including a grand slam to Eddie Matthews in the fifth inning that broke the game wide open. "I didn't have my best stuff tonight," Blyleven admitted. "I left too many pitches over the plate, and they made me pay for it."

The Red Sox managed nine hits but couldn't convert those into enough runs. Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle each contributed two hits, with Mantle driving in a run in the sixth inning. Vern Law pitched a complete game for Texas, striking out five and allowing only two runs. "It felt good to go the distance," said Law. "I just tried to keep the ball down and let my defense work."

Game 1 Highlights:

  • Top 1st: Richie Ashburn and Stan Musial set the stage with singles, followed by Mel Ott's RBI single. Jack Tobin added another run with a single.
  • Top 5th: Eddie Matthews hit a grand slam, driving in Musial, Ken Williams, and Ott. Matthews finished the game with six RBIs.
  • Bottom 6th: Mickey Mantle singled to drive in Marty McManus for Boston's first run.

Game 2: Red Sox Rally for Victory

Boston Red Sox 3, Texas Rangers 2

May 17, 2024, Fenway Park

In a much closer contest, the Boston Red Sox edged out the Texas Rangers 3-2. Don Sutton pitched seven strong innings for Boston, allowing just one earned run while striking out four. "I felt in control all night," said Sutton. "My slider was working, and I kept them off balance."

Fred Clarke's two-run triple in the seventh inning proved to be the difference. The Rangers got on the board first with a run in the opening inning, but Boston tied it in the third. Clarke's triple in the seventh gave the Red Sox a lead they wouldn't relinquish, despite a late rally from the Rangers in the eighth.

Boston's bullpen held firm, with Gary Lucas earning the save. "We needed that win," said Red Sox manager John McNamara. "The guys fought hard, and our pitchers did a great job."

Game 2 Highlights:

  • Top 1st: Richie Ashburn singled and stole second, scoring on a single by Stan Musial.
  • Bottom 3rd: Rick Burleson scored on a double play groundout by Fred Clarke.
  • Bottom 7th: Fred Clarke tripled, driving in Mike Gazella and Denny Doyle.
  • Top 8th: Richie Ashburn singled and later scored on a fielder's choice by Jack Tobin.

The series finale saw the Boston Red Sox stage a late-game rally to secure a 4-1 victory and take the series. Roger Clemens was brilliant on the mound, pitching a complete game while striking out nine and allowing just one earned run. "Everything was working tonight," Clemens said. "I was able to hit my spots and keep them guessing."

The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when the Rangers managed to push across a run. Germany Schaefer scored on a sacrifice fly by Stan Musial to give Texas a 1-0 lead. However, the Red Sox responded with a four-run eighth inning, highlighted by Tim McCarver's two-run double and Mike Gazella's two-run double.

"Tim came through in the clutch," said McNamara. "That was a huge hit that really got us going." McCarver added, "I was just looking for a pitch to drive, and luckily I got one."

Game 3 Highlights:

  • Top 7th: Germany Schaefer scored on a sacrifice fly by Stan Musial to give Texas a 1-0 lead.
  • Bottom 8th: Tim McCarver doubled, driving in Mickey Mantle and Greg Luzinski. Mike Gazella followed with a double, bringing home Jerry Lynch and McCarver.

Roger Clemens earns the MVP honors for the series. Clemens' dominant performance in Game 3, where he pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters while allowing just one run, was crucial in securing the series victory for the Red Sox. "Roger was phenomenal," said McNamara. "He gave us exactly what we needed and more."
