The Giants struck first in the top of the third inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Dale Murphy drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, followed by Johnny Bench's RBI single. A key double by Carlos Guillen brought in two more runs, giving the Giants a comfortable 6-0 lead by the end of the inning.
Pitcher Christy Mathewson was impressive on the mound, going seven strong innings, allowing only two earned runs on ten hits, and striking out three. Mathewson commented after the game, "It was a great team effort today. The defense had my back, and our bats were on fire. We just need to keep this momentum going."
The Cubs managed to put two runs on the board in the sixth inning with RBIs from Tony Oliva and Roberto Alomar. However, it was not enough to overcome the Giants' lead.
Tim Raines added a solo home run in the eighth inning to extend the lead. The Giants tacked on two more insurance runs in the ninth inning with RBIs from Bench and Guillen. "We came out aggressive and kept the pressure on," said Raines. "Everyone contributed, and that's how you win games."
